Creating Anthracite: An Exquisite Gunmetal Brassware Finish
Explore the meticulous craftsmanship and innovative techniques behind our new Anthracite finish, a stunning gunmetal tone that adds distinction to bathroom interiors.
Samuel Heath's dedication to blending chemistry and artistry is at the core of creating this exceptional finish, carried out entirely at our historic brass foundry in Birmingham, England.
Every brassware finish is a testament to our expertise and passion for quality. Anthracite, like Old Brass Matt, Antique Brass, and our other newly curated finishes that we are proud to release, is a result of precision engineering and a deep understanding of material science. Each stage of the process is carefully controlled by our skilled technicians, using time honoured methods alongside modern techniques to ensure a flawless and enduring finish.
Read on to discover the crafting process of Anthracite and uncover how our multi-layered approach forms the unique steely hue, rich warm undertones and soft matt surface that characterises its allure.
- Polishing: The journey begins in our on-site plating shop, where our master craftsmen hand-polish each brass part to prepare for plating. This stage is crucial in achieving the smooth, reflective surface that is the foundation of the Anthracite finish.
- Cleaning: To ensure the brass is entirely free of impurities, the parts undergo a rigorous cleaning routine, including a cathodic cleaner and acid dip. This multi-step process ensures that the surface is immaculate and ready for the intensive plating that follows.
- Copper and Nickel Plating: Each piece is then dipped in copper and nickel baths to create a durable and smooth base. Additional time is given during the nickel plating stage to prepare for the soft brushing that comes next.
- Brushing: After another thorough inspection to confirm quality, the parts are carefully brushed by hand in our polishing department once again. This step brings out the softly brushed effect of the finish, giving it the subtle yet distinct appearance of gunmetal.
- Lacquering: The parts are subjected to a further cleaning process before being coated with lacquer. This protective layer ensures the longevity of the finish while enhancing its gentle sheen.
- Dyeing: The brassware is treated with a conditioning dye that adds depth to the Anthracite colour, offering a multi-tonal appeal that sets it apart from other finishes.
- Oven Curing: To solidify the lacquer, the parts are hand-dried and placed in an oven at precisely 140°C. This curing process locks in the finish, ensuring that it remains resilient and of the highest quality.
- Final Inspection: Once cooled, each piece undergoes a final, meticulous inspection. Only when the Anthracite finish meets our exacting standards is it sent to the assembly department, ready to bring its refined elegance to interiors.
Our Anthracite finish is more than just a colour; it’s a design statement that offers a sleek, contemporary feel suited to modern bathroom and kitchen designs. Its distinctive gunmetal tone reflects Samuel Heath's commitment to exceptional craftsmanship, with attention to detail in every step of its creation.
Designed to complement a wide range of styles, this versatile finish exceeds the expectations of designers and homeowners, showcasing the allure of a true masterpiece in modern brassware.
