With its elegant leafy streets located a mere stone’s throw from the river Thames, the desirable district of Chiswick in West London exudes an atmospheric village atmosphere. Indeed, centuries ago, it was the haven of celebrated scholars, poets and artists. It is now the location of a work of art of a different kind - a sublime project by design studio Fox Interior Design.
Masterfully melding old and new, this extensive four-bedroomed semi-detached family home was built in the early 1900s yet exudes 21st century contemporary chic, thanks to a carefully considered renovation.
‘The brief was to create an elegant, contemporary home, infused with subtle colour and to inject character with architectural details referencing the history of the 1900s semi-detached home,’ explains Sarah Fox, the talented founder of Fox Interior Design, who has spent time in the United States, where she designed homes for some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including Brad Pitt and Winona Ryder.
The design narrative in this West London property focuses on a timeless aesthetic based around English style and diffused with Scandi influences. Comfort and practicality are thoughtfully balanced with touches of luxe to ensure the design elicits the perfect family home where elevated elements are at the fore.
The cornerstone of the renovation was a new extension that opens onto the garden and houses a sizeable open-plan kitchen, dining and living space. Sarah was tasked with the design of these spaces as well as the sitting room, utility and boot room, four bedrooms, dressing room, main ensuite bathroom, family bathroom, shower room and downstairs cloakroom.
Ensuring the house was easy to navigate and intuitive was a prerequisite. ‘We redesigned the layouts to create a flow throughout the house with a Zen-like calm and to achieve a style that was going to last for some time as this is a family home,’ explains Sarah.
The timeless décor exudes a harmonious aesthetic that links the different rooms and is based around a palette of warm greys for a sense of sophistication, with accents of deep blues and pops of fresh greens and rose pinks.
The heart of the home is undoubtedly the new extension with its airy open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, and this space is the focus of entertaining and where the family spends time together day to day. Generous bifold doors open onto the garden, injecting an indoor-outdoor feel, while roof lights drench the room with daylight. Soft grey Shaker-style cabinetry extends along one wall, with a substantial island, crowned by elegant glass pendants, providing both a handy preparation area and a breakfast bar for laid-back refreshments. Slouchy sofas are positioned close to the glazed doors and invite relaxation while enjoying views of the garden. A clean-lined wooden trestle table is generous enough for both family meals and dinner parties with its style nodding to contemporary dining. Nearby a capacious ink blue freestanding glazed cabinet grounds the scheme and is the perfect storage solution for serveware.
An air of monochrome magic sets the scene in the more formal sitting room next door. Here, a strikingly sophisticated backdrop of deepest midnight blue panelled walls is juxtaposed with oatmeal sofas and pale parquet wooden flooring, exuding a supremely elegant aesthetic.
The display of deep hues is continued upstairs where the main bedroom echoes the downstairs décor. Cocooning dark blue panelled walls extend part way up the walls, ensuring a dramatic backdrop that chimes with the sumptuous grey velvet headboard. ‘We wanted to add character and frame the bed by adding half-height panelling and painting it in a cosseting deep blue hue,’ explains Sarah.
To keep the look uncluttered, Sarah designed a dressing room that links the bedroom to the bathroom, creating a seamless suite. Shaker-style his and hers joinery on each side of the room echoes the cabinetry downstairs.
In the ensuite bathroom, Sarah has kept the look classically elegant, evoking a hotel luxe scheme that oozes a spa-like ambience. She has skilfully woven accents of intense greys into the scheme, showcasing them on the opulent freestanding bateau bath and the well-proportioned double vanity, and this provides a cohesive colour thread that flows from the main bedroom. ‘We had the luxury of space to incorporate a freestanding double vanity in a classic panelled design to reference the adjoining bedroom,’ explains Sarah. Both hero pieces evoke drama against the sumptuous and exquisitely veined white marble, Coliseum Statuario Venato, that hugs the bathroom walls and floor.
This scheme demanded equally alluring tapware and Sarah selected our LMK Pure bath and vanity fittings in Urban Brass finish to elevate the scheme further and imbue harmony.
LMK Pure’s distinctive shaping with minimal embellishment and concise llnes provides an enduring aesthetic that complements the scheme yet nods to the contemporary. ‘LMK is a timeless design – Bauhaus inspired, with a contemporary feel and proportions that just seem right,’ says Sarah. ‘The solidity of the fittings and the pure lines are what I felt worked so well in our scheme.’
The unlacquered finish injects further individuality. ‘I encouraged the client to be that bit more adventurous with fittings in this bathroom – brass instead of chrome or nickel. I wanted to introduce something special with the unlacquered, living brass finish so that it would age organically and change with time to form a beautiful, rich and characterful patina. My client loves the lived-in, antique feel of the living finish.’
LMK Pure in Urban Brass was also chosen for the shower. ‘We wanted to add warmth to the shower with unlacquered brass again,’ explains Sarah. Here, the brassware’s rich metallic hue offers contrast against the cooler tones of the marble. Sarah injected further interest with a niche that incorporates hexagonal mosaic tiles for a 21st touch that brings the scheme into the here and now.
‘I have always admired the craftsmanship beautiful quality, and iconic, timeless design of Samuel Heath fittings,’ says Sarah. ‘You can tell the quality by the weight of the fittings and range of finishes. I always like to support British companies and especially Samuel Heath with its heritage and core values of quality, innovative design and craftsmanship.’
